Adventure: Solar Eclipse
Team: Thing One, Thing Two
Date: May 20, 2012
Location: Yosemite Valley
Description:While Team Thing One, Thing Two is spread across the State, we can enjoy common activities. Such as Solar Eclipse watching.
The Cat in the Hat spent her time observing the eclipse at the Lawerance Hall of Science. She and her closest couple of hundred friends. As you can see. The party was on and they were enjoying the novelty of the event—but safely.
In the meantime, Thing One, Thing Two and son were in Yosemite, we thought, we might as well enjoy the fun of an eclipse. Yosemite's view of the eclipse did not have as much covering as those in the northern part of the state, it still was pretty good. We parked ourselves just west of the Wawona Tunnel and had a fine view of the sun and the Valley.
We tried three methods of viewing the eclipse. The first was a pinhole in a cardboard box. While we could see the pinprick of light coming through, there was very little ability to view the detail of the eclipse. Next, we tried to view the sun through the binoculars—not directly, but by casting the sun's light onto the ground. We could not get the light focused enough, consistently to see the eclipse.
Then we brought out the heavy gun. That would be Thing One's Star Hopper telescope. Using the telescope, we could cast the sun's rays onto the ground, on a ring, bigger than our flag. By the time we got set up, the eclipse was just about peaking. Exciting! Good images showed up on our towel.
Another car stopped to admire Half Dome. Then four young women came over and joined our meditation on the blotting out of the sun. Another car stopped and three more joined us. It was a regular solar gathering. After about 20 minutes, the gathering broke up and we packed up our stuff and headed back to Fresno.
What a great adventure!
