We love old hotels! There is the Hotel California in Fresno, the Travelers Hotel in Sacramento and Tioga Hotel in Merced. Now we have a new hotel for our collection—the Hotel Woodland. All of these places have something in common-grand old hotels which have deteriorated to some extent. So we are left with thinking about past grandeur and imaging times past. Hotel Woodland seems to be in this category as it is now used for long term stays-but it does have some interesting looking eating establishments on its ground floor.
Hotel Woodland, built in 1927, replaced the Byrns Hotel which had been condemned and destroyed 10 years earlier. It was a community project, funded by 50 local businessmen and the Weeks Security Corporation. With its 80 rooms, designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, for many years it stood as an elegant reminder of Woodlands prosperity. In 1997, a group of local business people started renovating the hotel. It took $7.5 million and 1,185 days to accomplish this. But in doing so, they have been able to preserve significant parts of the hotel, including a multitude of hand stenciled designs on the ceilings and beams.
