Deer at Grant Grove

It is sort of bad when all summer long we have been seeing deer and then realize in September we have not submitted any of them! No Not One! So when we saw this little young deer at Grant's Grove, it was time to get credit for it.

Adventure: 005, Hike 055 – General Grant Tree Loop

Team: YOLT
Date:  September 1, 2013
Location: Kings Canyon National Park

Hike Info:
Trail: General Grant Tree Loop
Distance: 1.04 miles
Duration: 0:25 Moving
Elevation Rise: 160'

Description:

We had finished being up at the Buck Rock Lookout for the day, helping out with the open house for the lookout. Sherri and Gary debated about what we wanted to do—go back to Fresno and eat, eat before coming back or hike and eat (notice the operative word here). We decided how can we leave the area without going on at least a short hike. So the question is how long of a hike and should we hike before eating? The answer—General Grant Loop and eat after wards since by this time it was after 5pm.

So we went up to the General Grant area of Kings Canyon Nation Park. This is a paved loop trail or just short of a mile. But in that mile, it goes through some of the biggest living things in the world, including the General Grant Tree. There is also a bit of historicity to the place as it is the site of the Gamlin Cabin. Even though it was Labor Day weekend, we did not see a great crowd of people. All in all, it was an enjoyable walk for us. Relaxing.

And in case you were wondering, we did eat afterward. There is a small pizza place in Grant Grove which we stopped at. On the way out, we saw Fritz and Ethel. We meet them on the JMT this summer. They live in Southern California, but were up at Grant Grove, celebrating their anniversary. Life is full of amazing coincidences.

Description:
Date Built: 1870
Architect: Israel and Thomas Gamlin

The significance of this building is that it was the first building within Grant Grove. It was the second home of the Gamlin brothers-Israel and Thomas. The first was a hollowed out tree called the fallen monarch. In 1870, they built this cabin and stayed in it during the summers while they herded cattle. They had set up a squatters claim for their 160 acres for the area. The Gamlin brothers, by reputation, were pretty hospitable hosts, providing food and shelter to those who came up to see the marvels of the forest. (The current cabin is a reconstruction of the original-and has been moved three times. The current location is close to the original cabin.)

When a government surveyor came through, he noted the beauty of the land and recommended it become a national park. On his own, he made an agreement with the brothers to exchange the land for other lands. The Gamlin brothers abided by the agreement, but the US government did not. Evetually, they settled in Idaho.
After the Gamlin brothers left the area, the US Cavary used the building to store food for their horses. Then in 1902, Lewis L Davis used it as his personal residence. He was the park's first ranger, so his residence also became a ranger's station as well.

Adventure: 220, Post 02 - Facebook Friday, Bag a Peak
Team: YOLT
Date:  August 9, 2013
Location:  Buena Vista Peak, Kings Canyon
Description:

Today's Facebook Friday is to go out and bag a peak. There are several 1000'+ peaks around us. But they can be hot and pretty dry, plus during the summer they are rattlesnake habitat. So we decided to go a little high and climb a peak in Kings Canyon.

The peak we chose was Buena Vista Peak. It is a 7,605' peak with a fairly short trail. One which is good for a sunset hike. That is what we did and we were not disappointed with the hike or the view-of course, what would you expect from a peak which is called Good View?

Well we have been up here several times. Once when it was pretty smoggy; another time when it was enveloped in a cloud-that was fun. But today with the smoke from fires, the sky was a nice pinkish red. Enjoyable.

Adventure 008, Hike 109 - General Grant Loop

Capture California, the Game-2012
Adventure: 008, Hike 109 – General Grant Loop
Team: Thing One, Thing Two
Date:  September 11, 2012
Location: Grant Grove, Kings Canyon National park
Hike Info:
Trail: General Grant Loop
Distance: 0.7 miles
Duration: 0:22
Elevation Rise: 90'

Description:
By now, gentle reader, you must be asking yourself, is Thing One and Thing Two done yet? No! A trip to Grant Grove would feel incomplete without paying homage to the General. So up we go on the paved path. But first we pass the Oregon Tree, then the California Tree. The Centennial Stump has always held my amusement that the people back east would think a tree like the sequoia would not exist—but of course, if Thing One had only seen trees the size of our good sized pines, he probably would be the same way.

Then we reach the high point of the walk—the Gamlin Cabin. It is the high point, because it is the highest point of our walk.

Now comes the General Grant Tree. One of the largest living things in existence. Where the first Sunday of December there is a ceremony marking it as the Nation's Christmas Tree-our church's Brass Choir has played here several times. Then it is back down to the car as it is almost dark and we must still get dinner ready.

If it seems confusing what we did this afternoon, take a look at my summer hike blog for a fuller description and a complete map.

Adventure 008, Hike 108 - Sunset Trail

Capture California, the Game-2012
Adventure: 008, Hike 108 – Sunset Trail
Team: Thing One, Thing Two
Date:  September 11, 2012
Location: Grant Grove, Kings Canyon National Park
Hike Info:
Trail: Sunset Trail
Distance: 3.6
Duration: 1:34
Elevation Rise: 537'

Description:
Team Thing One, Thing Two leaves the North Grove Trail, hoping to get to Ella Falls—a nice set of falls above Lake Sequoia. This trail is more of a jeep road, or actually an old tourist road, which feels like it will lead us down to Lake Sequoia. But along the way, we branch off to follow the DeadGiant Loop-see our previous adventure.

Once we get back on the Sunset trail, we continue down it and it starts to descend rather steeply. We are looking for the trail off to Ella Falls. We have visited these Falls, but always from the Lake Sequoia side. We see one path, but it does not look like it has been used in years. So we continue on. We get to a dirt road, with a sign pointing down to Lake Sequoia. We pass by a corral like area, which may be used by the YMCA for campfires away from the Lake. When we continue on, it looks like we are heading to the wrong end of Lake Sequoia to find Ella Falls. After checking our GPS, it confirms our suspicions.

We turn back and go to the Sunset Trail and continue down it for a ways. But we are starting to see that this is a bit farther than we anticipated. Coming from the closed Sunset campground would have been better. After hiking down the Sunset trail for another 15 minutes, we decide, it is time to return and do the North Grove trail.

On the way back, we scare up a doe and a couple fawns. After climbing up a ways further, we meet the same three deer. They run, we are always amazed to see such creatures gracefully take a hill which we are huffing and puffing on. In a little while farther, we reach the junction with the North Grove trail. So off we go down that one. After traveling two and a half or three miles on this trail, I do not see too much to recommend about it, except for being able to go to the Dead Giant Loop.

If it seems confusing what we did this afternoon, take a look at my summer hike blog for a fuller description and a complete map.

Adventure 008, Hike 107 - Dead Giant Loop

Capture California, the Game-2012
Adventure: 008, Hike 107 – Dead Giant Loop
Team: Thing One, Thing Two
Date:  September 11, 2012
Location: Grant Grove, Kings Canyon National Park
Hike Info:
Trail: Dead Giant Loop
Distance: 0.7 miles
Duration: 0:21
Elevation Rise: 89'

Description:
This loop starts from the SunsetTrail. Thing One, Thing Two take the northern side first. It skirts along a very nice meadow. We shortly pass by a very large sequoia, laying in the meadow. But this is not the Dead Giant. Further along, we come to the Dead Giant. The girth is monstrous, but through the years, fire and lightening took its toll on the top. Compared to other sequoias, the Dead Giant looks a bit stubby. But you can tell that in its day, this was the king of the forest. It is so large and the forest is so crowded, we cannot get a good perspective for a picture.

The loop continues around this short ridge till we can get a good look at Lake Sequoia. Lake Sequoia is a YMCA camp. Our three kids spent a lot of time here, along with Thing One, while they were all in YMCA Indian Guides. The sight always brings back fond memories. A couple was also at the overlook and was interested in Ella Falls—where we would like to go. But they are concerned with the descent and coming back up. The SunsetTrail is a short distance from this point and we reach it pretty quickly.

If it seems confusing what we did this afternoon, take a look at my summer hike blog for a fuller description and a complete map.

Adventure 008, Hike 106 - North Grove Loop

Capture California, the Game-2012
Adventure: 008, Hike 106 – North Grove Loop
Team: Thing One, Thing Two
Date:  September 11, 2012
Location: Grant Grove, Kings Canyon
Hike Info:
Trail: North Grove Loop
Distance: 2.2 miles
Duration: 0:58
Elevation Rise: 444'

Description:
Team Thing One, Thing Two start from the Grant Grove parking lot and go westward, descending, along the south part of this loop. Lots of sequoia trees which forms an overhead canopy. But we are not on this trail very long before we turn off onto the Sunset Trail and walk that trail for a couple of hours.

But then we rejoin the North Grove Loop and down we go again. When Thing One says down, he does mean down. For as much as team Thing One. Thing Two has traveled this trail, both on foot and on ski's, it always seems steep down and steep up again. About half way around, we meet another couple who must have had the same thoughts. They were wondering if they were on the right trail. Strangers from New York, but they were enjoying themselves and felt assured they were doing good.

The north side of this trail is the best. As you climb up, you start meeting up with a creek and the life which goes with water. The ferns start appearing and the sequoias look like they have a multitude of subjects around their feet. Even with it being steep, the climb is relieved by such views, until we go over a ridge and meet up with the incoming trail about 50 yards from the Grant Grove parking lot.

If it seems confusing what we did this afternoon, take a look at my summer hike blog for a fuller description. Our entry from last year:

Item: 8 - North Grove Loop Trail
Team: Tired 'Tirees
Date:  Oct 3, 2011
Link:

Desc: The North Grove Trail is a 2.02 mile trail which comes out of the General Grant parking lot. We usually cross country ski it once every two or so years. It has an initial steep down, loops through a burnt forest and then swings back up. By taking the Sunset Trail on the trail down, then you get rewarded by some magnificent Sequoia's and meadows on the way back up--it gives us old people time to contemplate. About 50 minutes on the trail.

Adventure 067 - Bambi Experience

Adventure: 67
Team: Thing One, Thing Two
Date:  May 6, 2012
July 11, 2012
July 25, 2012
Location: Grant Grove Area
Yosemite
Florence Lake
Description:
We were coming back from Panoramic Point, when Sherri exclaimed: There are a couple Bambi's! No Three, Four, Five! And so there were. The one above was happily munching away while we took its picture. Later on as we traveled down, we saw another flock of young deer in a meadow. The wonders of Spring!

But then, this gets topped when Thing Two is walking down the Yosemite-Tuolumne Trail, above Sunrise Creek. She speaks to a young deer and the deer proceeds to follow her for about a quarter mile.

Of course the Cat in the Hat also wants to get into the act, so she bags a Bambi herself. But being a good Cat, she does not chase the poor young thing.

Adventure 008, Hike 015 - Park Ridge Trail

Capture California, the Game-2012
Adventure: 008, Hike 015 – Park Ridge Trail
Team: Thing One, Thing Two
Date:  June 15, 2012

Location: Grant Grove
Hike Info:
Trail: Park Ridge Trail
Distance: 5.5 miles
Duration: 4:23
Elevation Rise: 1,210'
Description:

The first 300 yards or so is a paved path up to Panoramic Point. From here we can see that there is a lot of haze and smog restricting the view. Also there are some thunderheads in the distance, but they will not be bothering us today.

From here we take the Park Ridge Trail. This trail follows Park Ridge—a bit redundant isn't this? From parts of the path, you look down into the Grant Grove, Lake Sequoia basin and the Central Valley. On a clear day, you can see the tops of the Coastal Range. Today is not one of those. On the other side, you look down onto Hume Lake, the South Fork of the Kings River and across to the tops of the Sierra's. This view can be breathtaking—but once again, not today. Too much restriction on visibility.

As we walk up and down the ridge, we do get to enjoy the birds swooping from tree to tree. But they are over-shadowed by the dancing butterflies. The tiger swallow tails are everywhere, along with blues, checkers and others which I do not know. The site of them brings a sense of awe and serenity to the place. This scene replays itself throughout the trail, making for a visually satisfying day.

We eat lunch when we cross an access road. We have just descended down a long a hill on the ridge and come to the Azalea Trail junction. It is a pleasant overview of the Grant Grove area. We have new fare for lunch-Pita bread, cheese sticks and peperoni sticks.

We take off and read the end of the Park Ridge Trail—when we come to the Park Ridge Lookout. When Steven and I have hiked this trail before, the lookout had been unmanned. But now, there are two volunteers up there. We find out that it is their first day there. This lookout and the Delilah lookout are staffed with volunteers from the Buck Rock Foundation. We spend an enjoyable time talking with the ladies. We then return to the car via the same route we came on, arriving back at the car at 4:10pm. An alternative route would have been to return via the access road. The complete trip report can be found on Gary's Summer Blog.

Adventure 008, Hike 001-Panorama Point

On the trail up

Adventure: 008 – Hike 001
Team: Thing One, Thing Two
Date:  May 6, 2012
Location: Grant Grove, Kings Canyon
Hike Info:
Trail: General's Highway to Panorama Point
Distance: 3.0 miles
Duration: 1 hour, 25 minutes
Elevation Rise: 800'
Panorama Point

Description:

We are doing a trail from the General's Highway to Panorama Point. It is technically a segment of the North Boundary Trail in Grant Grove portion of Kings Canyon National Park. But we have hiked this on its own just to enjoy the pleasure of the early season. It is a short hike, maybe three miles round trip with about an 800' elevation rise.

We pull in; get our REI Flash Packs ready, along with our hiking poles; put on the old boots, and then, a burning truck pulls into the turn-out where we are parked. A man and two kids jump out and scoot away from the truck. Lots of smoke—Steven sees some flame—and there definitely are some popping sounds. Good thing he stopped.

Sherri and Steven went ahead, up the trail. I took the man and his children back to the Visitor Center. A ranger called for fire engines. It looks like I will need to find another place to park and meet Sherri and Steven. So I drove up to the Panorama Pt parking lot and walked down the trail, expecting to meet Sherri and Steven on the way up. No sign of them, except for some footprints which looked like the tracks were going in the wrong direction.

Got close to the highway and saw foam, an ambulance, a fire truck and a tow truck. Exciting, as long as it was not my vehicle.

Coming back up the trail, I saw the reason why I missed them. There is an older, gentler trail, which I took down. But then, there is a newer, shorter, but steeper trail, following some power lines. Sherri and Steven had gone up the short trail. Looking at the GPS logs, I missed them by three minutes.

We caught up with each other at Panorama Point. On a clear day, you can see much of Kings Canyon's back-country. Such as North Palisades and Kersarge Pinnacles. Both of which Sherri and I will be passing by later on this summer when we do our JMT adventure in July. So it is a wonderful thing to see all the handiwork from this Point.
