This was a case of team Thing One,
Thing Two knowing where something was and not being able to find it
as it was right under their noses. As we were going around the Sonoma
Plaza area, we were looking for this monument to the Bear Flag
Republic—the republic which California was for 25 days. But we were
not seeing it. So we decided to walk the perimeter of the plaza one
more time. And lo and behold, there it was.
This monument shows the raising of the
Bear Flag after a small group of men overcame the Mexican garrison at
Sonoma. General Vallejo was in command, but he was of the opinion
that it was inevitable that this area would fall under the the rule
of the United States.
NO. 7 BEAR FLAG MONUMENT - On June 14, 1846, the Bear Flag Party raised the Bear Flag on this spot and declared California free from Mexican rule. Following the raising of the American flag at Monterey July 7, 1846 by Commodore John Drake Sloat, on July 9 the Bear Flag was hauled down and the American flag raised in its place by Lieutenant Joseph W. Revere, U.S.A., who had been sent to Sonoma from San Francisco by Commander John B. Montgomery of the U.S. Sloop-of-War Portsmouth.
