While Newton Booth ran a wholesale
grocery store in this building, we wandered through a kite and toy
store—much to the delight of Thing One. Booth, who would one day be
Governor Booth would signal ships going up the Sacramento River to
arrange a price with them from his balcony. In this way, he could
avoid competing with other wholesalers. When Booth became Governor,
the inauguration ball was held up in the balcony. Not bad—we
actually made it to the Govenor's Mansion, just 150 years late.
