Capture California, the Game-2012
Adventure: 008, Hike 088 - Elfin Trail
Team: Thing One, Thing Two
Date:  September 6, 2012
Location: Los Osos-Morro Bay South
Hike Info:
Trail: Elfin forest Natural Area
Distance: 1.2 miles
Duration: 0:54
Elevation Rise: 123 feet

Description:

Thing Two was looking forward to this trail after last year. It is a 1.5 mile walk on a wooden walkway. There are viewing platforms to be able to look at the estuary. We saw lots of bird with our binoculars and camera. There are gnarly pygmy oak that are 500 years old. This area includes dunes that plants have been able to grow on but because conditions are harsh the plants life grows smaller. We used a pamphlet that gave description of the plants. We did have to be careful of the poison oak. We were also able to see Cerro Cabrillo. That would be our next hike. All is all it was a great hike.

From Day Hikes of the Central Coast by Robert Stone. “The Elfin Forest Natural Area is a 92 acre refuge at the eastern shore of Morro Bay, abutting the estuary. The area includes a salt marsh, coastal dune scrub, Morro Manzanita, riparian woodland and dense stand of pygmy oak”.
