Casa Del Desierto |
This grand old building, the Casa Del Desierto, was
the crown jewel of the Harvey House inn system. Currently the
building houses some city offices, the Barstow Chamber of Commerce,
and a couple museums. Also, the building serves as an unattended
railway station for Amtrak. But when we came by, a little after 5,
everything is shutdown. There is what looks like a bag lady wandering
about. The place looked a bit creepy. So we took our picture and
left.
California Historical Landmark:
"Harvey Houses were legendary in the history
of western rail travel. Operated by Fred Harvey in conjunction
with the Santa Fe Railway, the network of restaurant-hotels set a new
standard in quality meal service. Barstow's Spanish-Moorish
"Casa Del Desierto, " opened in 1911 and closed in 1971.
It was registered as one of the last and finest remaining examples of
the west's famous Harvey Houses.
