Description:

We were heading for the outlets in Vacaville when we saw the sign saying, Pena Adobe. Being a sucker these days for anything historical, Thing One and Thing Two pulled off, avoiding the triathlon occurring at Pena Adobe Park and finding the building. The museum was not open—it looked like it might open infrequently. Even the walking tour guide was empty. So we just relied on reading the sign and enjoying the coolness of the morning. Then it is onward to the Harry and David outlet store.

Just to tie it all together, that is Vacaville and Pena Adobe. Juan Felipe Pena and Juan Manuel Vaca were partners. Vaca sold part of his property to William McDonald. There was a provision that McDonald was to name a city after Vaca, which turned into Vacaville.

From NRHP:
The Pena Adobe was built in 1842 or soon after with adobe mud from nearby Lake Laguna. Restored in 1965 using original materials, it closely resembles the original building, except th roof thatch is replaced by hand split shakes. The entire dwelling was sheathed In redwood siding prior to 1870 which accounts for its good condition when restored. Between 1870-1880 a frame addition of 24* x 18' was added. This has been removed distance and is now a museum and office.
