The stone chapel of Rockville Cemetery is a rather plain building. But the surroundings give it a quietness befitting the cemetery. From here we search the cemetery for headstones. The Stone Chapel arose out of some gospel revival meetings held in 1850. By 1855, there was a need for a permanent structure needed and $4,000 was raised. With Rev. Bailey presiding, the chapel was opened. The second sermon was preached by Robert Waterman who named Fairfield and was written by his wife Coredlia, whom the town next to Fairfield was named for. In the early 1900's, the chapel deteriorated. But in 1939, the restoration project was started, with $1.50 coming from 40 Sunday School students.
Inscription from HMDB:
Erected by pioneers of Methodist Episcopal Church South with volunteer labor and donated funds. Cornerstone laid October 3, 1856. Dedicated February 1857. Site supplied by Landy and Sandy Alford. Chapel deteriorated by 1929 and deeded by the church to Rockville Public Cemetery District as a pioneer monument. Restored in 1940.
