Description:
We hiked a series of trails in the Giant Forest Area. This area lies in the Sequoia National Park. It was named the Giant Forest because of the large number of Sequoia Gigantea groves in the area. These gentle trees are the largest oldest living organism on earth. The groves of these Sequoias are few on earth and Giant Forest has these trees in abundance. The Grove at Giant Forest occupies an area of 3 square miles. There are over 40 miles of hiking area within the area, and we did a quarter of them today, spread over several trails.
Thing One would like to do The High
Sierra Trail in its entirety of 70 miles plus that takes you to Mt.
Whitney but today Thing One and Thing Two are only going to the first
named point on the trail which is Eagle View. The view is
astounding. One can see Moro Rock as well as down into the canyon
3,000 feet below. Thing One pointed out the first trips he took our
children on. Just before we started on this trail, we were able to
see a bear and her cub. Bears are out more this time of year than
any other. They are getting their final fat on before hibernation.
We also saw a deer that was just hanging out peacefully beside the
tree not too far from the bear and her cub. Nature is always amazing
and unbelievable. It is great to be able to observe it.
