Thing Two
Date:
September 14, 2012
Location: Yosemite,
Glacier Point Road
Hike Info:
Trail: Taft point
Distance: 2.5 miles
Duration: 1:31
Elevation Rise: 463'
Description:
This was hike number three for the
day. Thing One and Thing Two were wondering if they were going to be
able to get one more hike in before dark. We are always up for a
challenge. So trying to be speedy away we went. There are two
trails that leave from this junction. Earlier this season we went on
the trail to the right to Sentinel Dome. (See hike
number 31) But this time we were going to Taft Point. We saw a
small buck, a baby and mama deer. The trail was much better
than Sentinel dome. It was nice and wide and easy to follow. We did
not quite make it to the point before the sun went behind the
mountain. But we continued on and were able to see the wonderfully
colored sky and watch the light off the hills from Taft Point. Even
though we have been in this area several times the View from Taft
point and the fissures are stunning. We returned to the car at dusk
but it did get dark and Thing Two followed closely on Thing One
heels.
Robert Stone in Yosemite National
Park 80 Great Hikes states: “Taft Point is a rocky knoll that
overhangs the south rim of Yosemite Valley 3,500 feet above the
valley floor. The Fissures on the Profile Cliff are five vertical
fractures in the overhanging cliff, creating crevasses in the huge
granite masses hundreds of feet deep.” Page 152
